Debrecen and Budapest airports are the practical air connections, at ninety minutes and two hours respectively. Anyone taking the Lillafured railway should know that it climbs into the Bukk hills to a waterfall and a neo-renaissance hotel, and that it runs on a narrow gauge line.

Miskolc suits anyone whose priority is the lowest possible cost inside the European Union, particularly White Card holders from outside it. It suits walkers and cavers, given the Bukk and its extensive cave systems. It suits wine people, since Tokaj is an hour away and is one of the world's oldest classified wine regions. It does not suit anyone who needs an international community, anyone unwilling to face Hungarian for daily paperwork, or anyone expecting a prosperous city. It also suits anyone drawn to the Aggtelek caves an hour north, a UNESCO site whose Baradla system runs for twenty five kilometres under the Slovak border.
