Where to Work in Kingstown

Connectivity in Saint Vincent is adequate rather than good: fibre from Flow and Digicel reaches Kingstown and the developed south at workable speeds, and mobile data covers the main island and the larger Grenadines. There is essentially no coworking. Power cuts happen and the 2021 volcanic eruption disrupted supply across the north of the island for months. English is the only language required. Anyone planning to work from Bequia or further down the chain should treat connectivity as considerably weaker than on the main island. Anyone working with Europe should note the four-hour offset behind central European time, which puts a European afternoon at the start of the Vincentian day.

Getting Around Kingstown

Kingstown is compact, built along a harbour with the market and the cathedral within a few streets of each other, and it is walkable though hot and steep in places. Minibuses cover Saint Vincent cheaply and are how everyone moves. The Grenadines are reached by ferry from Kingstown, with Bequia an hour away and the smaller islands beyond, and the ferry timetable governs everything. Argyle International Airport opened in 2017 and finally gave the country direct flights from North America, which changed how easy it is to reach. Bequia is the practical Grenadine base for a longer stay, being large enough to have shops and a hospital while still an hour from the capital.

Visas for Kingstown

Saint Vincent and the Grenadines has no remote work visa. Most Western nationalities enter visa-free for up to a month, extendable at the immigration department in Kingstown, and Commonwealth citizens often receive longer on arrival. The extension process is routine but must be started before the initial stay expires. Anyone planning several months should ask for the maximum at the border and then extend. The country also runs no citizenship by investment programme, which distinguishes it from most of its neighbours. Anyone arriving by yacht clears in at Kingstown, Bequia, Union Island or Chateaubelair, and the paperwork is separate from an arrival by air.

January to May is the dry season, with daytime temperatures around twenty-nine and the calmest sailing conditions in the Grenadines, which is what most visitors come for. June to November is wetter and the hurricane season runs through it. The other consideration here is volcanic: La Soufriere at the northern end of Saint Vincent erupted explosively in April 2021, covering the island in ash and displacing tens of thousands, and it remains an active volcano that is monitored continuously. The Vincy Mas carnival falls in late June and early July, unusually late in the regional calendar, and is the island's largest event.

Pros and Cons of Kingstown

Saint Vincent is the gateway to the Grenadines, a chain of thirty-two islands including Bequia, Mustique and the Tobago Cays, which together make one of the finest sailing grounds in the world. The main island has rainforest, waterfalls and the Botanical Gardens, founded in 1765 and the oldest in the western hemisphere. Costs are low. Against that, there is no remote work visa, the internet is mediocre, the volcano is genuinely active, and Kingstown itself is a working port town rather than a place people choose to live. Saint Vincent is also one of very few Caribbean islands with black volcanic sand on much of its coast, which surprises people expecting the Grenadines.

Who Kingstown Is For

Kingstown suits a sailor above all: the Grenadines are the reason to be here and the country's whole geography points at them. It works for anyone who wants a cheap, green, English-speaking island with almost no other foreigners on it. It is a poor fit for anyone needing a long-stay visa or reliable connectivity, and anyone whose interest is the smaller islands should budget for the ferries and accept that internet gets worse the further down the chain you go. It also suits anyone drawn to hiking, since the walk up La Soufriere and the Vermont nature trail are among the best in the Eastern Caribbean.
