Where these came from

These come from 10 different sources, led by Japan's Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare (24), a United States embassy or consulate (5) and an Italian consulate (2). A consular list records the language because the mission publishes it for its own citizens, which is why Italian turns up in 8 countries rather than only where Italian is spoken.

36 of the 38 sit on an official list; the rest rest on the provider saying so or on a directory listing, and each card says which.

Where we have nothing

We list dentists in 177 further cities with no Italian speaker recorded, among them Hiroshima (170), Sendai (123), Matsuyama (116) and Kumamoto (109). That is a gap in what has been published, not proof that nobody there works in Italian.

Questions

How many Italian-speaking dentists does this page list?
38, in 18 cities. That is the number whose working language we can trace to a published source.
Where are most of them?
Tokyo with 13, Basel with 3 and Nagoya with 3. Together that is 50% of the page.
Does a listing mean the dentist speaks Italian personally?
Not always. Some sources name a practice whose staff include an Italian speaker rather than the named person, and each card quotes the wording its source used.
